If you have lived in Portugal for a few years, you may be wondering whether you already meet the requirements to apply for Portuguese nationality. This guide walks through the essential steps.
Who can apply
Broadly speaking, you may apply for nationality by naturalisation if you:
- Have resided legally in Portugal for at least seven years (for nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries, such as Brazil, and of the EU) or ten years (all other nationalities);
- Have sufficient knowledge of the Portuguese language and of Portuguese culture, history and national symbols;
- Have not received a final conviction to an effective prison sentence of three years or more.
Note: since 19 May 2026, the new Nationality Law increased the residence period (previously five years for everyone) and introduced a knowledge test. Applications already submitted continue under the old rules. See what changes in New Nationality Law 2026.
There are also specific routes, such as marriage or civil partnership with a Portuguese citizen, and children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Portuguese nationals.
Documents you will need
- An up-to-date, translated birth certificate;
- Proof of legal residence time (SEF/AIMA residence permits);
- A Portuguese language certificate (level A2);
- A criminal record from your country of origin and from Portugal.
